ChatGPT Windows App is in Early Release: Free Access Coming Soon!

Get ready, Windows users—an “early version” of the ChatGPT desktop app has finally arrived! If you’ve got a ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, or Edu membership, you can jump in and start exploring. And don’t worry, free users—you’ll get your turn soon, as OpenAI promises a rollout for everyone in a future update.

It’s been about five months since the official ChatGPT desktop app made its debut on macOS, racking up some impressive updates along the way, like Voice Mode and the shiny new GPT-4o model. But don’t get too excited—Voice Mode isn’t part of the deal on Windows just yet. That said, you still get most of the goodies macOS users enjoy. Open up a sleek ChatGPT command window using the Alt+Space shortcut, upload files or photos for a quick AI analysis, sync all your chats with your OpenAI account, and even generate images with DALL-E. Not too shabby, right?

The best part? You won’t need to go out and buy the latest gadget just to run this app. Unlike the macOS version that demands a new Apple Silicon device running macOS 14 or later, the ChatGPT Windows app only requires Windows 10 version 17763.0 or higher. Easy peasy.

Now, you might be wondering—why use the ChatGPT app when you’ve already got Windows’ built-in Copilot AI? Well, it really boils down to what you prefer. Both ChatGPT and Copilot use the same AI magic, but Copilot is packed with Microsoft integrations that can either supercharge your workflow or drive you nuts, depending on how you look at it.

Just a quick heads-up: ChatGPT’s default Alt+Space keyboard shortcut might clash with other apps on your PC, like PowerToys. If you run into issues, you’ll have to tweak some settings to avoid any conflicts. And hey, if you’re feeling adventurous, you might even be able to remap ChatGPT to the Copilot key on newer Windows laptops. I haven’t tested this myself, though, so take that suggestion with a grain of salt.

You can grab the ChatGPT Windows app from the Microsoft Store or by heading over to the OpenAI Downloads page, which will send you straight to the Microsoft Store. Just remember, for now, a ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, or Edu membership is a must to get in on the action. But sit tight—OpenAI says free access is coming by the end of the year.
