Harvard Faces Federal Funding Freeze Over Alleged “Disrespect to the Nation,” Says McMahon

The Trump administration freezes Harvard’s federal research funding over campus protests and alleged governance failures, reigniting tensions between the university and federal authorities.

Harvard Faces Federal Funding Freeze Over Alleged “Disrespect to the Nation,” Says McMahon

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a strongly worded letter, Education Secretary Linda McMahon accused Harvard University of undermining the U.S. higher education system by enrolling foreign students who, she claimed, exhibit “contemptuous attitudes” toward the United States.

McMahon emphasized that the Trump administration remains willing to continue federal funding for Harvard—provided the university commits to complying with federal law. However, she asserted that the Ivy League institution has “consistently failed to meet its legal obligations, ethical and fiduciary duties, transparency responsibilities, and standards of academic rigor.”

“A university, at its best, should uphold the highest ideals of our nation and illuminate the minds of thousands of hopeful students who walk through its gates,” McMahon stated. “Harvard has betrayed this ideal.”

At a press briefing held earlier today, Department of Education officials announced that Harvard will be barred from receiving new federal research grants until it demonstrates “accountability in its university governance.” Officials clarified that the freeze only applies to research funding and will not impact federal student aid or tuition assistance programs.

Harvard-Trump Tensions Escalate

The dispute between Harvard and the Trump administration stems from campus protests in support of Palestine and the university’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The federal government has threatened to freeze funding for several institutions on similar grounds.

In Harvard’s case, the administration has moved to suspend $2.2 billion in federal funding and halt a $60 million contract. In response, Harvard filed a lawsuit arguing that the freeze is unlawful and a politically motivated overreach.

Former President Donald Trump, posting on his Truth Social platform, added fuel to the fire by declaring, “We will revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status. They deserve it!”

However, legal experts speaking to U.S. media noted that such action is beyond a president’s authority. Under a 1998 law passed by Congress, the president is prohibited from directing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to investigate, audit, or revoke the tax-exempt status of any specific organization.
